Upper cervical chiropractic is a specialty within the chiropractic profession in which the doctor focuses on the upper portion of the cervical or neck region, typically the top 2 bones, for subluxation. This region of the neck is of the utmost importance to the integrity of an individual’s nervous system because of its proximal relationship to the brainstem – the root from which all of the nerves in your body stem. This region is so important that anatomist have given these bones unique names – atlas and axis.

Atlas or C1 is the upper most neck bone and axis or C2 is the second upper most neck bone. They are uniquely different in size and shape when compared to the other 22 bones of the spinal column. They are the only two bones or vertebrae in the entire spinal column that do not have a intervertebral disc which leads to a greater range of motion in individual’s neck. In fact, the ability for humans to turn their head from left to right largely comes from a lack of the intervertebral disc in the atlas-axis region. On the other hand, a greater range of motion can also lead to misalignments of atlas and axis causing nerve interference.
